Calculator of Privilege

An online tool to measure privilege for a superb EDI consultant who is a ray of sunshine

An EDI consultant came to me asking to design a graphic based on the Wheel of Privilege, but with this one being customised for the Scottish legal sector.

An EDI consultant came to me asking to design a graphic based on the Wheel of Privilege, but with this one being customised for the Scottish legal sector.

After some discussion on the end use of this graphic, I suggested that perhaps creating a simple online tool would be more useful so it can be an interactive element to her workshops, and the data from each session can be captured. This sparked many problem-solving discusisons and a real excitement between myself and the Diversity+ team.

Initial drawing

We decided that the tool should have a standalone look and feel, separate from the client’s identity, but there wasn’t the need or budget for a big brand identity side project. I did want to have some form of visual prompt to kick-start the look and feel development and give some meaning behind it.

The initial drawing shown above came to be the chosen concept; two paths going from A to B, one being more direct and another having to take more twists and turns.

This felt like a really simple visualisation of privilege, and it gave me lots of visual elements to play with and incorporate throughout the site, and ultimately, the wider brand.

Early planning of categories

I then designed the site and brought in a developer who I worked closely with to make sure the site functioned as needed, including adding CMS capabilities so the client can edit the questions and create new versions of the tool for future workshops.

What started off as a request for a simple infographic became a unique offering for my client.

Since it’s origin I’ve helped create promotional materials such as socials graphics, flyers and promotional videos. We’ve even created a Lite Edition of the tool for demo purposes, and have exciting plans to shape and expand the tool in the future.

I’m really proud to have been part this project and grown with it over the years. I think it’s a super interesting and important purpose, and Diversity+ have been a great team to collaborate with.

I highly recommend speaking to Naeema of Diversity+ to hear more about the Calculator of Privilege and how her team could help your organisation with EDI support and education.
